An Oarsman in Kashmir
There are times in life when we long for the steady strength and certainty of a benevolent and self-assured father who, in times of crisis, can simply take the lead and steer us back to safety. After a rough personal summer, the artist began painting “An Oarsman in Kashmir” as it depicted a strong and well-dressed man, rowing a beautiful, if raggedy little girl across a jewel-toned river in his rickety boat. Although we don’t see his face, we somehow are reassured that she is safe with him.
The artist became absorbed in the contrasts: between the crystal blue water and the child’s brilliant red scarf; and between the sturdy, dapper oarsman and his simple, spare wooden vessel. He has the confidence to navigate assuredly forward, whereas the child peers back at the viewer, allowing herself to be carried to a distant shore.
The quiet reflection in this work suggests that in difficult moments, we don’t always have to navigate or steer our own way. Sometimes, stepping aside and letting someone else take the oars is the best solution.
